Here’s how to practice abhyanga:

  1. Place a designated oil towel on the floor below you to prevent any oil spills.

  1. Heat the oil using a pan made of stainless steel, copper, cast iron, or glass. You can also utilize butter or tea warmers for this task. 

  1. Begin by gently massaging the oil onto the front of your pelvic region, encompassing your lower abdomen and pubic bone. Deliberately move your hands in a slow upward and downward manner. Shift your attention to the sides of your hips, gradually progressing towards the sacrum and buttocks at the back. Employ a circular motion to tend to all the joints, focusing initially on the left hip. 

  1. Next, move your attention towards your left leg and foot, applying smooth and extended strokes upon the muscles while employing circular motions on the joints. Proceed to repeat the same process on your right leg and foot. 

  1. By applying oil to the navel, gently glide your hand in a circular pattern, spiraling outwards. Proceed upwards along the right side of the torso and downwards on the left. Conclude by progressing downwards on the left side of the belly. Continue with vertical movements around the left side of the chest, ensuring to cover the breast area, as well as along the side of the torso. Repeat this procedure on the right side. 

  1. Utilize all the flexibility within your body to generously spread oil on your back, making vertical movements from the lower torso to the upper back, concentrating specifically on the spine. You might like to get assistance with your upper back. Do your best to cover the entire body.

  1. Next, shift your attention towards your left shoulder, then gradually proceed downwards along your left arm and hand. Engage in elongated motions specifically targeting the muscles, while focusing on circular movements to cater to the joints. Repeat the aforementioned process for your right side.

Once done with the 8 steps above, you can drape yourself with the designated oil towel and unwind for 15-20 minutes before indulging in a warm bath or shower without lathering soap. You can also opt to remain unclothed as long as the room temperature is warm and sufficiently cozy.
